Laws change without notice. This summary reflects our best understanding of current Virginia law but may not reflect recent legislative changes, court rulings, or local ordinances. Always verify current law with an attorney or official state source before carrying a firearm. This is not legal advice.

Permit & Carry Requirements

Virginia is a shall-issue state requiring a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) for concealed carry, issued by circuit courts. Applicants must be at least 21, demonstrate competence with a handgun through training, pass a background check, and meet all eligibility requirements. Open carry is permitted without a permit in Virginia.

Reciprocity

Virginia honors concealed carry permits from all US states through its broad reciprocity statute. The Virginia CHP is recognized by many states across the country. Virginia has an active red flag law. Always verify current reciprocity when planning to carry in other states.

Prohibited Locations

Virginia prohibits carry in courthouses, schools and on school property, places of religious worship during services (without authorization), air carrier airport terminals, and any location posted against firearms. Virginia recently expanded some prohibited locations — monitor for legislative changes as Virginia's gun laws have been evolving.

NFA Items in Virginia

Virginia permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. Virginia has no state-level magazine limits or assault weapon ban, though legislation has been proposed. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 benefits Virginia residents. Virginia's firearms laws have been subject to significant legislative activity in recent years.
