Permit & Carry Requirements

Utah is a constitutional carry state where no permit is required for eligible persons 21 and older to carry a concealed firearm. Open carry is also permitted. Utah issues a Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP) through the Department of Public Safety — Utah's CFP is particularly popular because Utah issues permits to non-residents, making it valuable for broader reciprocity.

Reciprocity

Utah honors concealed carry permits from states that have reciprocity agreements with Utah. The Utah CFP is one of the most widely accepted non-resident permits in the country and is recognized by dozens of states. Non-residents 21 and older may apply for a Utah CFP even without visiting Utah.

Prohibited Locations

Utah prohibits carry in secured areas of airports, correctional facilities, courts, government attorney offices, mental health facilities, law enforcement facilities, and any posted private property. Utah generally has fewer prohibited locations than many other states, though campus carry rules are complex — concealed carry by permit holders is generally permitted on state college and university campuses.

NFA Items in Utah

Utah permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. Utah has no state-level restrictions on NFA items beyond federal law and no magazine limits or assault weapon ban. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 benefits Utah residents and the active firearms community in the state.
