Permit & Carry Requirements

Texas is a constitutional carry state where no permit is required for eligible persons 21 and older to carry a handgun, concealed or in a holster. Texas also issues a License to Carry (LTC) through the Department of Public Safety for residents who want a permit for reciprocity in other states or to access certain locations. Open carry is permitted with an LTC or under constitutional carry in a holster.

Reciprocity

Texas honors concealed carry licenses from all US states. The Texas LTC is one of the most widely recognized licenses in the country, accepted in dozens of states. Non-residents 21 and older may carry in Texas under its constitutional carry provisions. Texas has specific signage laws for prohibited locations.

Prohibited Locations

Texas has specific signage laws — posted 30.06 signs prohibit concealed carry by LTC holders, 30.07 signs prohibit open carry by LTC holders, and 30.05 signs prohibit all carry. Prohibited locations include schools and school grounds, courts, correctional facilities, polling places, race tracks, airports, amusement parks, places of worship (without authorization), hospitals, sporting events, and establishments deriving 51%+ revenue from alcohol sales.

NFA Items in Texas

Texas permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. Texas has no state-level restrictions on NFA items beyond federal requirements and no magazine limits or assault weapon ban. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 significantly benefits the large number of NFA item owners in Texas.
