Permit & Carry Requirements

South Carolina is a constitutional carry state where no permit is required for eligible persons 18 and older to carry a concealed firearm. Open carry is also permitted. South Carolina issues a voluntary Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for residents who want a permit for reciprocity in other states.

Reciprocity

South Carolina honors concealed carry permits from all US states. The South Carolina CWP is recognized by many states. Non-residents 18 and older may carry in South Carolina under its constitutional carry provisions. Posted signs prohibiting firearms in South Carolina have the force of law.

Prohibited Locations

South Carolina prohibits carry in schools and on school grounds, law enforcement facilities, correctional facilities, courthouses and court facilities, hospitals, churches (unless authorized by the church), establishments serving alcohol for on-premises consumption, and any posted private property. Posted 'no concealable weapons' signs have the force of law and must be complied with.

NFA Items in South Carolina

South Carolina permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. South Carolina has no state-level restrictions on NFA items beyond federal law and no magazine limits or assault weapon ban. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 benefits South Carolina residents.
