Laws change without notice. This summary reflects our best understanding of current Massachusetts law but may not reflect recent legislative changes, court rulings, or local ordinances. Always verify current law with an attorney or official state source before carrying a firearm. This is not legal advice.

Permit & Carry Requirements

Massachusetts requires a License to Carry (LTC) for concealed carry of handguns, issued by local police departments on a shall-issue basis. Applicants must be at least 21, complete a safety course, pass a background check, and meet all eligibility requirements. Open carry is technically legal with an LTC but highly unusual in practice. A Firearm Identification (FID) card is required for rifles and shotguns.

Reciprocity

Massachusetts does not honor concealed carry licenses from any other state. Out-of-state license holders have no carry rights in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is one of the most restrictive states for reciprocity, and visitors must leave their firearms secured in their vehicles or at their accommodations.

Prohibited Locations

Massachusetts prohibits carry in schools and on school grounds, courthouses, police stations, correctional facilities, government buildings, airports, public transportation, establishments serving alcohol, and any location where posted. Massachusetts also restricts carry near polling places and at public gatherings.

NFA Items in Massachusetts

Massachusetts prohibits suppressors and SBRs regardless of federal registration status. Massachusetts has a 10-round magazine limit and an assault weapon ban. The assault weapon ban is interpreted broadly by Massachusetts authorities and has resulted in significant restrictions on common semi-automatic firearms. These state prohibitions apply in addition to all federal requirements.
