Permit & Carry Requirements

Maine is a constitutional carry state where no permit is required for eligible persons 21 and older to carry a concealed firearm. Open carry is also permitted. Maine issues a voluntary Concealed Firearms Permit through the Maine State Police for residents seeking reciprocity in other states.

Reciprocity

Maine honors concealed carry permits from other US states that recognize Maine permits. The Maine Concealed Firearms Permit is recognized by a number of states. Non-residents may carry in Maine under its constitutional carry provisions. Always verify current reciprocity before traveling out of state.

Prohibited Locations

Maine prohibits carry in courthouses, schools and school grounds, state or federal government buildings, establishments licensed to sell liquor for on-premises consumption, and any posted private property. Federal prohibited locations such as post offices and federal buildings also apply.

NFA Items in Maine

Maine permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. Maine has no state-level restrictions on NFA items beyond federal requirements. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 applies to Maine residents. Maine has a red flag law but no assault weapon ban or magazine limits.
