Permit & Carry Requirements
Louisiana is a constitutional carry state where no permit is required for eligible persons 18 and older to carry a concealed firearm. Open carry is also permitted. Louisiana issues a voluntary Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) through the Louisiana State Police for residents who need a permit for reciprocity in other states.
Reciprocity
Louisiana honors concealed carry permits from all other US states. The Louisiana CHP is recognized by many states across the country. Non-residents 18 and older may carry in Louisiana under its constitutional carry provisions when visiting the state.
Prohibited Locations
Louisiana prohibits carry in police stations, sheriff offices, detention facilities, courthouses, polling places, state and local government meetings, schools and on school grounds, school buses, establishments licensed to sell alcohol for on-premises consumption, houses of worship, and any posted private property.
NFA Items in Louisiana
Louisiana permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. Louisiana has no state-level restrictions on NFA items beyond federal law. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 applies to Louisiana residents. Louisiana has no assault weapon ban or magazine capacity limits.
