Laws change without notice. This summary reflects our best understanding of current Kansas law but may not reflect recent legislative changes, court rulings, or local ordinances. Always verify current law with an attorney or official state source before carrying a firearm. This is not legal advice.

Permit & Carry Requirements

Kansas is a constitutional carry state where no permit is required for eligible persons 21 and older to carry a concealed or openly carried firearm. Kansas issues a voluntary Concealed Carry License (CCL) through the Attorney General's office for residents who wish to carry in states that require a permit.

Reciprocity

Kansas honors concealed carry licenses from all US states. The Kansas CCL is recognized by many states across the country. Non-residents 21 and older may also carry in Kansas under its constitutional carry law. Always verify current reciprocity before traveling to another state.

Prohibited Locations

Kansas prohibits carry in state and municipal government buildings (unless they provide adequate security measures), law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities, courthouses, polling places, schools and school grounds, state-owned or leased buildings, and any posted private property. Local governments may also designate additional prohibited locations.

NFA Items in Kansas

Kansas permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. Kansas has no state-level restrictions on NFA items beyond federal law. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 benefits Kansas residents. Kansas has no assault weapon ban or magazine capacity restrictions.
