Laws change without notice. This summary reflects our best understanding of current Illinois law but may not reflect recent legislative changes, court rulings, or local ordinances. Always verify current law with an attorney or official state source before carrying a firearm. This is not legal advice.

Permit & Carry Requirements

Illinois requires both a Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card and a Concealed Carry License (CCL) for concealed carry. The CCL is issued by the Illinois State Police to applicants who complete 16 hours of training, pass a background check, and are at least 21. Open carry is prohibited in Illinois. Illinois has some of the most complex firearms regulations in the country.

Reciprocity

Illinois does not honor concealed carry licenses from any other state. Out-of-state permit holders have no carry rights in Illinois and must comply with all Illinois firearms laws while visiting. Illinois has no reciprocity agreements for concealed carry.

Prohibited Locations

Illinois has an extensive list of prohibited locations including schools, public parks, public transportation, government buildings, courthouses, police stations, hospitals, mental health facilities, establishments serving alcohol, gaming facilities, libraries, sports stadiums, museums, amusement parks, zoos, nuclear facilities, and any posted private property. Posted 'no guns' signs have the force of law in Illinois.

NFA Items in Illinois

Illinois permits federally-registered suppressors and SBRs, though the PICA (Protect Illinois Communities Act) restricts certain assault weapons and accessories. Illinois has no magazine capacity limit at the state level, though some municipalities have additional restrictions. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 applies to federally-approved NFA items in Illinois.
