Quick Reference
Laws change without notice. This summary reflects our best understanding of current District of Columbia law but may not reflect recent legislative changes, court rulings, or local ordinances. Permit & Carry Requirements
Washington DC requires a Concealed Carry License (CCL) for concealed carry, issued by the Metropolitan Police Department. Applicants must be at least 21, complete 16 hours of firearms training, pass a thorough background check, and demonstrate good reason to fear injury to person or property. Open carry is prohibited. DC has some of the most restrictive firearms laws in the United States.
Reciprocity
Washington DC does not honor concealed carry licenses from any state. Out-of-state license holders have absolutely no carry rights in DC. DC residents with a DC CCL have extremely limited reciprocity with other states due to DC's restrictive laws and non-standard licensing process.
Prohibited Locations
Washington DC prohibits carry in all government buildings, public transportation, restaurants and bars, schools and universities, places of worship, medical facilities, stadiums and arenas, entertainment venues, libraries, polling places, and any posted private property. The list of prohibited locations in DC is extremely extensive and covers virtually all public spaces.
NFA Items in District of Columbia
Washington DC prohibits suppressors and SBRs regardless of federal registration status. DC has a 10-round magazine limit and one of the broadest assault weapon bans in the country. DC does not honor any out-of-state carry licenses. Possessing prohibited items in DC carries severe criminal penalties.
