Permit & Carry Requirements

Alaska is a constitutional carry state with no permit required for eligible persons 21 and older to carry a concealed firearm. Open carry is also permitted. Alaska still issues a voluntary Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) which is useful for reciprocity when traveling to other states that require a permit.

Reciprocity

Alaska honors concealed handgun permits from all US states and territories. The Alaska CHP is recognized by many states across the country. Non-residents can carry in Alaska under constitutional carry rules if they are 21 or older and legally permitted to possess a firearm.

Prohibited Locations

Alaska prohibits carry in courthouses, the offices of the court system, domestic violence and sexual assault shelters, schools and school grounds, bars and licensed premises primarily serving alcohol, police stations, correctional facilities, and any location posted against firearms. Federal prohibited locations also apply.

NFA Items in Alaska

Alaska permits federally-registered NFA items including suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs. There are no state-level restrictions beyond federal NFA requirements. The $200 NFA tax stamp elimination effective January 1, 2026 significantly reduced the cost of acquiring NFA-regulated items in Alaska.
